Summer 2008

Daniel has applied for yet another university course.. From September he hopes to study Clinical Theory in Neuromuscular Therapy, continuing his dedication to Continuous Professional Development, and building on already three university degrees and a good dozen cerificates and diplomas in exercise... Daniel keeps it philosphical: "The more I know, the more I know that I don't know. I hope I will gain new insights for my clients, and can exchange ideas and concepts with other professionals"

Also, since June 2008 Daniels is father to a little baby girl.

Since April 2008 Roberta Valquerizo is no longer part of Jumping Tiger..

Daniel

May 2008

Our trainer Daniel is expecting his first son or daughter in June 2008. In the mean time his wife gets the best of ante natal Pilates and massage, as well as other advise. Daniel says: "I have trained women for many years ante and post natal, however seeing and experiencing my wife is giving me a unique insight what went on with my clients in that time, and what wasn't taught or essentially expressed to me. I think I just became a better Pilates teacher for during pregnancy through this."

Dec 2007

Daniel after years of teaching one to one ante and post pregnancy Pilates, this time it's serious!!!!!

Daniel is happy to announce that he is teaching his wife Ante Natal Pilates!

Hey congratulations!

November 2008

Are you extraordinary?

Only a few people like to get up early for their exercise. In Daniel's experience these are the highest achievers who don't have time at any other time in the day: 'Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund' they say in German, equivalent to the 'early bird' saga. Daniel is looking to fill the three vacant early morning spots for Pilates training or accompanied fitness walks or combination, for 7 am. Please get in contact if that could be just right for you. Sessions at other times are also available.

May 2007

Journalist Monica Gonzalez-Correa recently reviewed Daniel for a magazine style interview.  We have been given the right to publish the full interview here:

“A day in Daniel's Life”   CO 2007 All rights reserved    by Monica Gonzalez-Correa

DANIEL ZYLBERSZTAJN,    Pilates Teacher, 37, London

“I set my alarm clock for 6:30am,… and check out the weather on the radio. I need to know if it’s going to rain because I travel on a motorbike - I used to ride a bicycle to reduce my carbon footprint but got injured too often. I have a bowl of whole porridge with soya milk and dried fruits then I’m off to see my first client: Sir Martin,* a high-ranking civil servant who leaps out of bed at 7:15am with the noise of my bike! He is too busy to exercise alone so he needs me twice a week for a minimum of two hours –my tariff is just over £50 Pounds, for a one hour session…

Personally, I have always exercised. After graduating in 1997 in sociology at Goldsmiths College, I looked for a job for more than a year and found nothing. When I realised that one could make a living with physical exercise, I did a postgraduate course in exercise sciences at the University of Bedfordshire. I discovered Pilates at a seminar and was simply hooked. General exercise has a lot of potential for injury, but Pilates takes a step back and works slowly and with more precision. I still do research in sociology too from time to time, the two compliment each other.

Later in the morning, I’m back home to feed TsiTsi and Spirit -my parakeets, who live cage less. They absolutely adore fresh lettuce and seeds. Then, I jump on my motorbike and head to Hampstead Heath in North London for a one hour walk and 30 minutes of Pilates exercises -to enjoy the natural environment and the fresh air. Teaching involves a lot of observation and I might be tempted to just forget about my own body.

Back home again for a shower, I get myself ready for my next clients: a group of four middle-aged ladies in Wimbledon: Suzan, Liz, Carla and Jodie. I live in King’s Cross so it’s quite a journey. They do Pilates for health but also for aesthetic reasons.... Pilates is too often considered as a fashion accessory but I try to re-educate, to teach body awareness, and to think about health issues. People are normally in bad shape and pain because they haven’t managed their lifestyle properly. I have had clients with an unhappy relationship, who are unsatisfied with their job, or with a history of anorexia. One client was so depressed that I was the only person she would see in the whole week. At that point, human contact became part of my practice, so I decided to get an MSc in sport sciences at Brunel University in which half of the curriculum was psychology.

At the beginning of my career, I started putting adverts in supermarkets and I got the most challanging clients: unwilling to put much effort into the program themselves. They thought I could work miracles in terms of weight loss, like loose 4 stones in three weeks before a wedding. Getting exposure in Cosmo and Vogue, I ended up being so successful that I had fully booked mornings ane evenings.  But today, I don’t want to work so taxing anymore. I would rather stick with some loyal clients and give them the best aI can. Also, Pilates is not about teaching 20 people at once in a group which is almost irresponsible. I want to keep that special human contact.

Lunch time for me is around 3 p.m.  at home or a healthy restaurant in town. I’ve been a vegan for 4 years now and before that, I was a vegetarian for more than 20 years. I am 37. I have moral issues with eating animals. I consider that no creature should experience pain, including my clients! The afternoon ends with a well deserved nap and, then, I’m ready to go and see my evening clients, retiring around 10 p.m.   […]

I was born in Germany and moved to Israel  when I was 16 to have a Jewish upbringing. My father survived the concentration camps but still went to live in Germany. Personally, I think that sociology and history enrich my Pilates work because it helps me to understand how life is for my contemporaries; it gives me a global perspective on life.

[…] I have learnt through the years to limit my working hours and teach in the evenings twice a week only. One needs time out; nobody wants to suffer from stress or bad nutrition. In the end, we are all the result of the way we live.”

On popular request and more so, due to satisfactory results, Daniel has reintroduced massage into Pilates. You can now even have a double treat worth two and a half hours of one hour of Pilates and one hour Massage and won’t have to leave the comfort of your house! Just sleep away after the session, with reduced tension and increased relaxation.

Muscle Techniques of Champions.. Amelie Mauresmo wins Wimbledon 2006. Mauresmo’s muscle training has been supervised by David Warren. Daniel teaches a small range of the
Warren techniques within his own Pilates teaching, passed on down to him courtesy of Margot Holt, one of David Warrens assistants and students. Mauresmo is yet another success of Warren after he successfully worked amongst others with Olympic Gold athletes Denise Lewis, Jonathan Edwards.

Jan 2006

New year - New Start!

The honest truth is, you gotta get going beyond the January resolutions. What better than hiring a weekly reminder that comes to you! No escape!

Go on learn a new body awareness and join our league of loyal clients!

With great regret we learned that David Warren has recently been diagnosed with a terminal disease. He is in may ways a contemporary “Joseph Pilates,” having helped Olympians like Denise Lewis and Jonathan Edwards and many Tennis Players. Margot who is also teaching Daniel, is one of the few people entrusted with learning his techniques and methods. We hope that the diagnosis will not set in for many years into its progressive stage.

There is a new range of Pilates clothes available. Click on here to get connected!

All our clients we wish a great winter season!

October 2005

Daniel has been accepted as Doctoral MPhil student at (UCL) University College London, University of London.

The last few days were hectic for all. Roberta is welcoming two new work based Pilates customers, and both Daniel and Roberta teach pregnancy Pilates 1-2-1 to different customers. Daniel says, I have now 8 Pilates babies and more to come. Time for his own? Some clients thinks so!

Daniel has attended the Advanced Pilates course with Polestar: Critical assessment and reasoning skills for Pilates, with the director of US Pilates giant Polestar Dr. Brent Anderson at the same time he continues supervised regular training of his own with Pilates Foundation Founder Member Margot Holt and the technique of David Warren she uses.

Roberta has decided to invest in further education in the near future in the relationship between body and psychology. She is currently experimenting with Feldenkrais, a Rudolph Steiner Gymnastic School and other methods.

August 2005

Daniel is bound to teach his third year at the Eaton House Primary School (the teachers) next year!

As seen on the Main page, Daniel sadly knew a person killed in the London Terror Bombing. Sahara Islam, 20 was the person where Daniel would pay in cheques most of the time at his local Cooperative Bank Branch. Daniel brought flowers to the branch and wrote messages of condolences.

June 2005

Daniel and Roberta went to attend a Polestar Pregnancy seminar and also to see IC Rapoprt who took the now famous pictures of Joseph Pilates back in the 1960s. Chuck said that Joes had incredibly strong hands, seemed to brutalize the delicate dancers and overall expressed a feeling intimidation and insecurity as he was in there as well as admiration for the 81 year old Joseph Pilates. He said Joe claimed that he slept on one of the trapeze table beds starting exercises as early as he woke up just like cats and dogs. To see the pics check Rapoports web-site http://www.rapo.com/icrgallery/gallery_frames.htm

Roberta and Daniel also attended the meeting of the UK Scoliosis Association in Manchester’s Children Hospital. In terms of exercise applications there was absolutely nothing and it appeared that people had an overall spirit of desperation. There is little research done on exercise for scoliosis, however this is partly due to the dominance of wealthy surgeons on the research evidence. We acknowledge Hawes Research (2003) as well as Yoga for Scoliosis, the Schrott Clinic in Germany and above all our colleague Annette Wellings Pilates Therapist in Lancaster as encouraging examples that exercise has its role to play in scoliosis, albeit evidence based research is still lacking overall.

We are honored that we are now “training knights.” Congratulations to our client of 3 years who got knighted on 28th of April 2005 – if they knew how stiff your back, knee and shoulder can be sometimes they would have thought twice about it, but our tiger training for you might have deceived them.

New Public Class

Daniel wishes to express his gratitude to the help of tow exceptional therapists: Margot Holt “Pilates” Therapist and Janet Moorhouse, Massage Therapist and Complementary Therapist for their help in maintaining a balance between work and own body treatment. Pilates teachers are primary examples that you should practice what you preach. It goes with the belief that you should have a concept of yourself how an exercise feels and not just what it does. Further, some help is needed by externals even to Pilates teachers to provide an eye on the person who teaches day in day out. Even Pilates elder Mary Bowen is still seeing a Pilates teacher for her own body once a week!

Holiday of pain*
Recently I went on
Holiday in Spain. I rented a small car and two hour later I knew that the little car and I would become enemies. It was then that my back became quite tense and hurting. What bad omen for a holiday that relied heavily on the car. In an attempt to diminish the impact of the bad seat I put a pillow behind my lower back curve but it only had limited results. In the next 8 days I frequently had breaks, squatting, walking and do some stretches. Still frequently in the evening I felt the tensions in my lower back, despite being a trained Pilates teachers. I did Pilates every night and was able to keep the tensions at bay. Had I not done so I most certainly would have been in pain. There is a theory that those who know what correct good posture feels like are less willing to put up with bad sitting. The nervous system puts very quick messages to the conscious brain that something is severely wrong in the lower back. People with back pain may not have such great sensitivity.

A few days later the tensions moved upwards into my left shoulder and I had real attack of impingement, where I was unable to lift my arm. Again it derived from driving in this car. As I knew how to get myself out of this misery I immediately started working on the shoulder and back three times a day, like medication, after 1 ½ days my shoulder was fine again. This shows how dangerous bad car-seats and may I add to this also bad airplane seats are. They can do severe damage to even those oif us who otherwise pride themselves to have a healthy back.

Please take care when you book your holiday car and even more if you are buying a car for personal use. It is always worth to test seat a car. As a general rule you should be able to sit upright and your knee should almost be at a 90 degree angle. Overall Land Rovers, Volvos, and other higher seat vehicles are better for us. You could even go as far as rent a small van rather than a chico racer to prevent back pain. In airline seats you often have no choice. Get up frequently and stretch. Maybe demand a pillow that you can then put between your lower back and the seat to fill the gap.

Jumping Tiger News Letter Feb 2005

WATER AND EXERCISE

Importance of water and movement for back care. According to Dr F. Batmanghelidj book: Your bodies many cries for water, sufficient water intake is essential to ensure the disks can have enough water available for pressure. He recommends a minimum of 8 pint glasses of water, excluding any caffeine containing drinks , sugary drinks. He further rightly notes that as disks have no blood supply, the only way to get water in and out the disks is via movement. Thus water + exercise every day is the way out of instability. We agree.

EVEN PELVIS A KEY

According to Lulu Cross in “Die Cross Methode (German ed. 2002),” pelvic misalignment is often the key to many back issues, and other complications including knee pain, foot pain, heart pain, headaches and tooth-aches. She notes that in Germany only 2.8% of people have a well aligned spine . Everybody else deviates from that and is slightly scoliotic (uneven side swings of vertebras. She writes that uneven legs are often wrongly diagnosed as uneven by birth, as opposed to uneven pelvis causing the uneven leg length. An uneven pelvis asks the body to compensate in areas it is not designed for to re-achieve balance. This is not only causing posture related issues, but also mal-programming of the brain areas responsible for specific stability functions. We believe that Lulu Cross is right and that Pilates attempts similar analysis.

Meeting Mary Bowen

Mary Bowen an original student of Joseph Pilates (going back as far as 1959) held a recent talk about her life with Pilates, in London . Mary was a great inspiration encouraging trainers to be client focused and come out with novel ways of interpreting the Pilates techniques. She acknowledged that the technique had “moved on” and that there are many different forms now of which she indicated the adapted ones to be preferable. She like many others rejected Romana Kryzanowska’s claims that she (Romana) taught the only real Pilates. Bowen’s unique approach of combining Pilates with psychoanalysis was demonstrated. She also gave a in depth insight of Joseph Pilates, Hannah his assistant and Klara his wife. A picture emerged of a man not without failures. Mary complemented Alan Herdman’s work and advocated herself a soft in touch approach focusing on breathing and pelvic floor muscles. What she taught to the trainers present was very reminiscent of Pilates meeting Alexander Technique! Being such an experienced teacher herself Bowen still takes her own weekly session as she did all her life with another experienced teacher! The picture was taken at the end of the session when Alan Herdman Students present briefly introduced themselves to her and posed for a photo-opportunity!

THANK YOUS AND APPRAISALS

Thanks to Helena for the wine. I am glad you had such positive feedback from your clinical assessment of your shoulder and my Pilates advise meant no operation necessary.

Congratulations both to Paul and Sam for having experienced a break from your shoulder pain and your Lower Back pain for the first time since years through my Pilates teaching. I am pleased with your progress as well, albeit we could have doen without the cold and fall.

Thank you for your appreciative feelings on my teaching Marina. It is good to know that you think that there something in my Pilates teaching that helps you get balanced, relaxed and above all that your knee is so much more stable!

March 2004

Pilates Training same name different meanings!

What does it mean that Daniel Zybersztajn chose to take up a Pilates apprenticeship with Alan Herdman? Is this just another training institute – are they not all the same?

Pilates matwork these days is often taught in a few weekends. Most gym based teachers have such three weekend degrees. Alan Herdman says. “Everybody can learn 32 exercises in a few weeks, but it is the application to individual needs that matters.”

Alan Herdman an ex-dancer (back in the 1960s) performed Pilates just like most people did and often is still performed in many gyms today. He learned all Pilates exercises in 1969 just after Pilates died. ” However Alan Herdman soon found that in rehabilitation and for most average people these were totally unsuitable if not detrimental. From the late 1970s he began to dare to change the exercises many instructors still regard as sacrosanct and untouchable. The result was a regime of exercises that can be tailored to anyone and moreover to those who come to Pilates due to back conditions, knee or hip problems. What’s more careful attention to precise detail understanding of the underlying principles and the training of adaptation is given to students, all of whom had to be pre-exposed to the exercises to get accepted to his school and most of whom had exposure to movement schooling or rehabilitative body work (the average age of the students is over 30).

At 64 Mr. Herdman stands now at the peak of his 40 year long career and together with the physiotherapist Shirley Hancock their wealth of applied knowledge is second to none other. It is no mistake that Alan gets quoted by many current Pilates Teachers as source of information and inspiration. In his studio the clientele ranges ages from 10 with growth related syndromes to near 90 with osteoporosis and arthritis and possibly hip replacements. Picture your average ballet trained gym Pilates teacher who swears that only the original mat-work is true Pilates working with such clientele and you know that it is not only not possible but that adaptations are necessary and most appropriate. Further does Mr Herdman believe that a one year long training is the only way to transfer some of his knowledge in the depth necessary.

Joseph Pilates himself studied movement and changed exercises his entire life!

You still have the choice to book yourself onto a £5 Pilates class performed by a weekend qualified person who perhaps impresses you because of her lean body, but it is hoped you appreciate more now what effective Pilates training is and what perhaps not.

Corporate Fitness: Daniel welcomes his new assignment at world leading AT Kearney

60 and 90 minutes only from now on

30 minute and 45 minute sessions have been abolished, as they are found unsuitable for the aims of most people!

From Newsletter Nov. 2003

Surprises arrive sometimes like a late November day when I got this letter in the post (transcribed):

22nd November 2003

Dear Daniel,

Does it not seem incredible that just over a year ago (when I just consulted you) I couldn’t run200 yds?

I still can’t believe that I have run the New York Marathon. I have really enjoyed all the training. I fee much better and more energetic. I look healthier due to being healthier and spending more time outside and I have lost about a stone. It’s all fantastic. It really is your encouragement and enthusiasm that totally changed my attitude. I never enjoyed games at school (I was always goalkeeper) and how I enjoy running now. Thank you very much. Thank you, thank you for all your help and support. Love Mary !

Mary A. WC1

Thank you Mary. I really appreciate your comments and Many Thanks for the NY Marathon Sweat-shirt! You know I think Marathon’s are crazy (albeit I prepared you for it) maybe I should do my first in 15 years

Did you read Filmmaker Michael Winner on Pilates and how he thinks it prolonged his quality of life? See Daily Telegraph (12/Nov / 2003)

From Newsletter Sept. 2004

BACK TO POPULAR DEMAND:

David Lloyd Raynes Park, Wimbledon has asked me to restart my Pilates sessions! Customers were so upset about the end of the Pilates sessions I taught the management asked me to teach two sessions instead of one! This was explicitly due to popular demand and complaints issued by their customers! Whilst Pilates should always be taught in small groups I am really trying hard to make the sessions there worthwhile for those who attend it. However Pilates still suffers because it is being seen just like an Aerobic class. We could still do with more men, and there is still an apathy and lack of understanding of the value of these sessions to the ordinary gym attendee. David Lloyd has shown that they are willing to come up with the costs of well qualified Pilates teachers and stands alongside just a few others. Many gyms only want cheap Pilates instructors who are badly trained.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ERIK AND SANDY ON BENJAMIN!

Sandy after having had 8 months of prenatal Pilates exercises has finally given birth to a healthy baby, without cesarean. You have definitely contributed in making the birth and pregnancy easier said the proud mother!
